Chinese School of San Diego Programs, Participations and Fund Raiser events (2005):

Chinese New Year Banquet (1/22/2005):
This event is a fund raiser for the Chinese School Center along with 5 other organizations. We provided planning, flyers and posters about the event, arranged entertainments and posted drawing prizes for a trip to China for two. A bus was provided for about 40 seniors to attend the event. 640 people attended the banquet.

Dragon Boat Event (4/23/2005):
A one day event where the Chinese School sponsored the Chinese School teachers, students and their parents to learn about this cultural event. We provided manpower, food/drinks/towels and transportations (2 buses) to the event. About 3,000 people attended the event.

Hong Kong Book Faire (07/20 - 25/2005):
Attendance at this book faire was to find new resources and textbooks to help with our ever growing needs for better material to be use within our own Chinese school. The Hong Kong book faire ran for 5 days and from last year attendances, there were well over 500 thousand people. Vendor's representation number about 392. The vendors were located among 5 different floors and areas within the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center.

Moon Fest Faire (9/17-18/2005):
A Chinese cultural event, moon cakes, customs and history was presented in partnership with the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (CCBA). We helped to print up posters, drawing tickets and participated in the planning sessions.

We operated a stall/tent for the Chinese School of San Diego, sold Chinese school item, partially for raising funds and let the public aware of our school in San Diego. Thousands attended the event.

CISANI (Chinese Immigration Service Agencies Network International) Toronto, Canada (11/2-4/2005):
A conference, held yearly for the last 25 years, we have been a participating organization for over 20 years. A conference held that exchanged ideas and held discussions about social service issues, the changing demographics and social concerns. Members included representatives from international cities from Hong Kong, Toronto and Vancouver. Sixty (60) members from 20 cities were in attendance.

Chinese New Year Banquet (1/22/2006):
This event is the only fund raiser for the Chinese School of San Diego partnering with 5 other organizations. We provided planning, flyers and posters about the event, arranged entertainments and posted drawing prizes for a trip to China for two. 700 people attended the banquet.

Movie Time Program: (4/1/2006- 09/23/2006):
A program started in April of 2006 and will continue in the future when our Chinese school classes are in session. Movie time is open to the public, but shown to encourage the student to be a little more immersed in the spoken Chinese language. Participation ranges from 7 to 29 people attending the movie.

Los Angeles Cultural Field Trip (05/20/2006):
A field trip for the teachers and students of our Chinese School to experience the Chinese cultures locally. The trip was designed, transportation was provided by the school, to introduce many of the students unfamiliar with a visit to the Chinese Cultural Center of Taiwan, a popular Chinese book store in Monterey Park and a visit to the Chinese American Museum. A total of 90 people took interest in the cultural trip.

Singapore Book Faire (05/26/2006 - 06/4/2006):
Attendance at this book faire was to find new resources and textbooks to help with our ever growing needs for better material to be use within our own Chinese school. The Singapore book faire had displayed a lot more bilingual textbooks that are considered to be more closely aligned with the similar environment here in the United States. Singapore is an English speaking country island and Chinese is taught in their school as a foreign language subject. About 300-400 thousands people attended the fair.

China Trip (7/21-29/2006):
The Chinese School organized a 9 days trip to China covering 3 major cities of Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai. The trip was organized primarily for our Chinese school students, but its opened to anybody else that would like to learn and experiences the cultures of China. We had sign on 47 people ( 21 of the travelers from the school are the students, parents and staffs) on this trip. It was a highly successful trip and enjoyed by everybody.

A conference to exchanged ideas and discussions about social service issues, the changing demographics and social concerns. Members included representatives from international cities from Hong Kong, Toronto and Vancouver. Twenty (20) members from 10 cities were in attendance.
Chinese School of San Diego Programs, Participations and Fund Raiser events (2007):

Chinese New Year Banquet (2/11/2007): The year of the "Golden Pig"; the golden pig year occurs once every 60 years. This event is one of our main fund raiser for the Chinese School partnering with 4 other organizations that was held on 2/11/2007. We provided planning, designing of the flyers and posters about the event, arranged entertainments. Entertainment included a changing face performance and ancient Chinese costume of the early Emperor and dynasties period and various minority costumes.

South Bay Chinese Lantern Festival (3/3/2007); The Chinese Lantern event is held annually in LA and Irvine, CA. An educational field trip held for the students and their parents. It's a one day trip, with 94 students and parents signing up for the event. The 3 hour program presented Kung Fu demonstrations, various dancing participating groups (ribbon dancers, peacock dancers and minority costume dancers), Chinese Yo-Yo act and others entertainments; there were 23 programs presented in all. Last but not least, they displayed 5 huge lantern floats with various dog themes. Overall there were over 2,000 people that attended the festival.

Gateway to the University (5/5/2007): An informal seminar presented to the Chinese community on various aspects of gaining entrances into the universities. Seminar was organized by the Herald Community Center (Chinese Christian Herald Crusades-CCHC) and we help to host their project on our premises. Topics covered from preparation in enrollment, including GPA, SAT scores, AP scores, life as freshmen to parent/student assistances available. About 60 people attended the seminar.

Chinese School assembly presentations from (January to May 2007): Below are some of the highlights that were presented to the students and their parents during the school's assembly. The students and parents usually numbered 190 people that attend the assembly.
  1. Dinosaur/Fossil Presentation (1/20/2007): A presentation by Mr. Zhouping Guo introducing to the school about the dinosaur period and various fossils uncovered in China. He did a video as well as a slide presentation and brought several fossils to show the students.
  2. Kite presentation (1/27/2007 & 3/10/2007): A two part kite presentation, the first part of the presentation, on 1/27/07, covered historical recording of kites in ancient China and their uses; then the students would decorate a design on the kite face.
  3. On the March 10th presentation, Mr. Richard Loera, a local kite expert, explained about kite making and showed the students how to make a kite.
  4. Chinese Calligraphy (2/10/2007): Lecture presented by Mr. Lam Yut Hang, a noted calligrapher, distinguished intellectual, youth educator and a publisher. He published the "Children Paradise", a biweekly children magazine for 42 years that has influenced several generations and continues to have an impact on the scene of children literature and comics today. He demonstrated various styles of Chinese character writing, from the seal script, clerical script, standard script and to the cursive script.
  5. Kung Fu demonstration (4/28/2007): John Wilson, who has black belts in Kung Fu (Tai Chi Chuan) and Kenpo karate, covered the original five (5) styles of kung fu. He did a demonstration and had student participation.
  6. Bank of America (5/26/2007): Program offered by B of A to encourage students, parents and staffs to open a savings or checking account. Especially for students, it will provide as a vehicle for savings. The presenter spoke covered topics on checking, savings, credit cards, students loans to identity theft as well as credit rating.
Accreditation (January-May 2007): The Chinese School has received "candidacy status" with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), the accrediting commission for schools. Likewise, we are fully recognized by the San Diego Unified School District and the Escondido Union High School District.

Chinese Essay Program (06/16/2007): Presented by the House of China, a program that's open to all students from several Chinese schools in the county. This is an annual event that the Chinese School of SD provides sponsorship and support. The essay contest hopes to encourage the students with an opportunity to show what they have learn in school and express their feeling and thoughts in Chinese. The contest last year had 43 entrants and 102 people turned out for the award presentation banquet

Southern California Council of Chinese Schools -SCCCS: Attendance and participation in the seminar structure programs is an annual event for our teachers and administrative staff. Presentations cover teaching methods, new materials, constructive and innovations in teaching in the Chinese schools. The conference will be held in July 27-29, 2007.
